"Tussocks of fur dress skin stretched over taut muscle. Upright it stands, but it looks ready to drop onto fours. Its snout snarls and its ears twitch. It barks, and its hyena tribesmen answer."
Packs of snapjaws are common early-game enemies. Snapjaws are rarely encountered alone, usually appearing in a group, with several scavengers, a hunter or two, and a larger brute or warrior.
They have a deep subterranean cousins called Snapjaw Troglodyte which are 10 level higher than them and equipped with better gears. They can still be found in cavern but will eventually becomes less prominent as troglodytes appears more frequently.
- See their respective page for other Troglodyte variants (Feeder, Spearfiend, Trapper, and Holwers)
Scavengers have the Swarmer special trait. They're still not very dangerous, but be conscious of letting them surround you nevertheless. Since they die so easily it might be worth killing off the scavengers first to keep their bonuses from becoming overwhelming.
Scavengers occasionally spawn with (or pick up?) artifacts. It's rare, but the odd Scavenger may throw a grenade!
Unlike the other snapjaw, which charge blindly, the hunters hang back and plink with ranged weapons. Usually Short Bows. An un-checked (or un-noticed) hunter can do a lot of damage over a few rounds.
Brutes might be the physically toughest snapjaw, but don't have Swarmer and don't spawn with good gear. These can be a real danger to very low level characters. Their low level, humanoid equipment slots and decent health make them good targets for Beguiling or proselytizing early in the game.
Warriors spawn with better equipment than a standard Snapjaw. They usually wield a two-handed weapon. Their low level, humanoid equipment slots and decent health make them good targets for Beguiling or proselytizing early in the game.
Probably the rarest of the snapjaw (though arguably not the hardest). Always spawns wielding a shotgun!
Snapjaw corpses are edible, but have poor nutritional value.
In the Desert Canyons biome, snapjaw strongholds can be encountered. These are large rectangular wooden structures with arrow slits and a single set of gates on one side. Typically a large number of snapjaw can be found within, along with a randomized Legendary snapjaw. There's always a chest in the center building.
